[Robot technology that changes life] A robot that shares 情 with people."Warm Companion" performance. 2021.07.11

#Robot has come to be a "warm companion" that connects people and people and society. It has deeply penetrated our lives with various functions and services that care for the socially disadvantaged and enhance the convenience of disabled users.

Robots are providing education and care services to the socially vulnerable on behalf of humans at a time when face-to-face activities have been minimized due to the spread of COVID-19. It provides a new daily life for the disabled with an exercise assistance function.

In the future, more robots are expected to stay next to us due to increased demand for care and medical care due to the entry into an aged society. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology Evaluation and Management (KEIT) will focus more on R&D to secure such "warm robot technology" along with industry, academia, and research institutes.

◇ Robots interact with humans.

The consortium of Sangmyung University and Seoul National University's Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation developed human-friendly human-robot interaction technology. Contactless sensors such as cameras and kiosks measure not only heart rate, breathing, and skin temperature, but also voice, facial expressions, and behavior to recognize the subject's condition and express the results by robots.

It is possible to reduce economic direct and indirect costs due to psychiatric diseases, as well as solve social problems. It is expected to provide telemedicine for patients suffering from trauma and dementia as well as self-healing services in their daily lives.

Currently, this technology is being used for training the national archery team. This is because the heart rate of athletes measured by non-contact in archery at the Tokyo Olympics will be exposed to the broadcast screen. In preparation for this, our team is training to maintain composure in mind with technology developed by the Sangmyung University consortium.

Lee Eui-chul, a professor of human intelligence information engineering at Sangmyung University, said, "We have secured the world's best technology to obtain physiological signal low data through non-contact," adding, "We are receiving commercialization inquiries from various companies."

In April 2019, a consortium involving Manentel, a company specializing in rehabilitation medical devices, launched R&D for "Development of People-Centered Smart Both Arms Lee Seung-Aids Robot." The robot puts a stretcher (sling) under the patient's back and lifts it with both arms. The patient can be moved comfortably and safely. It is the world's first secondary robot that combines smart sling technology and information technology (IT) control technology.

If this project leads to commercialization, the physical burden of care workers will be reduced by about 20%, which will help prevent musculoskeletal diseases. It is also expected to improve the quality of life of caregivers as well as patients. As it is the world's first technology, if it succeeds in commercialization, it will be able to take the lead in the global market.

It is a robot technology that can take care of both patients and caregivers, said Jung Kwang-wook, CEO of Manentel. "We will quickly promote demonstration and commercialization according to market conditions."

◇ Robot Gifts Daily Life

The consortium, in which Angel Robotics participated, conducted an electric exoskeletal robot R&D in 2019 to assist the movement of people with complete paralysis of the lower body.

It is very difficult for people with paraplegia to live like non-disabled people because they can only do limited activities centered on wheelchairs. In particular, long-term wheelchair use is likely to reduce blood circulation, bone density, digestive function, and kidney function, which is likely to reduce life expectancy.

Angel Robotics developed wearable robot (work-on-suit) technology for the disabled with complete paralysis of the lower body in this R&D and succeeded in commercializing the wearable robot with incomplete paralysis of the lower body. It is a robot that enables standing walking and expanded the scope of daily life by expanding the radius of life for the disabled with paraplegia. As a result, users can dream of living independently without assistance in the future.

The company attracted 9.7 billion won worth of Series A round investment in January last year, and is also attracting about 20 billion won worth of Series B round investment.

We will push for global expansion by obtaining overseas certification and establishing a local branch, said Gong Kyung-chul, CEO of Angel Robotics. "We plan to expand our business to Europe and the United States, starting with Malaysia."

◇ Government, "Warm R&D".

The Ministry of Industry and KEIT plan to realize the social value of robots and continue to promote robot R&D to support services for vulnerable groups.

The development of care robots, which began in accordance with the 3rd Basic Plan for Intelligent Robots announced in 2019, has now entered the completion stage. This year, the upper limb self-rehabilitation robot system will be developed for examination, prevention, and treatment of symptoms of upper limb motor disorder, which is increasing with the entry into an aging society.

The government supports the development of "care robots" in accordance with the national basic plan for care and rehabilitation for the disabled and the elderly. In addition to the four care robots that have already been supported (change in posture to prevent bedsores, support for Lee Seung-jo, excretion, and meal assistance), the △ non-face-to-face upper limb rehabilitation robot system △ patient-centered non-face-to-face rehabilitation platform will continue to be supported.

It is also starting to secure robot technology to assist the movement of the socially disadvantaged and technology to help home and social life. It will also review the development of "autonomous mobile robots" that support the movement of the elderly and the disabled in wide indoor spaces and care and housekeeping support robot technology for the socially disadvantaged at home.

"Robots can be an alternative to social problems caused by aging," said Hwang Byung-so, head of the Department of Machinery and Robotics at the Ministry of Industry. "We will continue to use robots to improve the quality of life for the people."
